Welcome back to our community of self-improvement and truth-seekers! Today’s post is dedicated to the entrepreneurs and creatives amongst us. In a previous post, we explored the transformative power of boredom and self-discovery, drawing inspiration from the remarkable journey of a young Isaac Newton during the 1665 plague. Today, we delve deeper into the invaluable trait that propelled Newton to greatness: self-discipline.

Self-discipline is a challenge faced by many of my Life Coaching clients, especially creatives and entrepreneurs. If you're someone building a new business, scaling your current one, or venturing into creative pursuits like writing, podcasting, art or content creation, simultaneously, you're also likely navigating the complex task of balancing self-growth, maintaining fitness and nutrition routines, and still making time for social interactions with friends who follow the conventional 9-5 work grind. To juggle all of these successfully whilst also dealing with the sh*t life throws at you, you really do have to master the art of self discipline.

For entrepreneurs and creatives, the struggle is real. You're striving to find your own unique path while deciphering the flow of your creative juices, which essentially define your legacy. And let's not forget the pressure to generate income and secure your livelihood. Trust me, I've been there! You definitely want to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

In the next few minutes, we will explore seven practical strategies to help you master the art of self-discipline. These strategies have not only been instrumental in my own journey but can also be applied by you daily to enhance your path to success. My Life Coaching clients find these super useful and consistently give great feedback when using these strategies below.

1. Identify Your Peak Productivity Hours

This might seem simple, yet it's an aspect many creatives often overlook. While the traditional workday begins around 9 am and ends around 5 pm, we're well aware that these hours may not align with your peak productivity. Some people thrive during the early morning hours, while others are night owls. As an entrepreneur or creative, your journey is unique. Hence, it's crucial to recognize and harness your peak productivity hours to establish a routine that capitalizes on your moments of highest efficiency. This isn't to say you shouldn't work during other hours; it simply means doubling down on your focus during your prime hours.

2. Set Clear and Achievable Goals

Newton's groundbreaking work on the laws of motion was driven by well-defined objectives. It's imperative that you set specific, achievable goals that align with your dreams. Break these goals into manageable steps, and meticulously track your progress. You may have heard of SMART goals—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timed. The clarity of your goals should be such that an outsider can assess their completion without prior knowledge of your journey. Embrace both short-term goals for daily, weekly, and monthly achievements, as well as long-term goals spanning 1, 3, 5, and 10 years. Don't hesitate to envision the future; visualization is a critical component of success. You must see and feel your goals to become them. If you’re having trouble visualizing and need help setting clear goals, please reach out to me for help.

3. Prioritize Tasks and Manage Your Time Wisely

Time is your most valuable resource as an entrepreneur or creative. Newton, even during his isolation amidst the plague, demonstrated the wise use of time. As an entrepreneur myself, I understand that in the initial stages, it's essential to dedicate as much of your waking hours as possible to your creative endeavors. Nevertheless, your ultimate goal should be to regain control of your time. Building a business that can function independently of you is the key. As your business grows, your cognitive resources will be required elsewhere, and entrepreneur burnout is no laughing matter. To effectively manage your time, and help you avoid feeling overwhelmed, employ proven tools such as time blocking and the Eisenhower Matrix. Establish daily routines centered around your most critical tasks, as consistency forms the foundation of self-discipline.

4. Overcome Procrastination

Procrastination is a formidable adversary, one that I personally continue to wrestle with. It has sabotaged countless creators’ dreams and visions. Procrastination effectively creates space between the present and the task's completion. Imagine you’re an aspiring writer building a new blog. Within this empty space, your mind generates compelling reasons why your current writing project won't succeed, opening doors to a myriad of tantalizing distractions. The initial glance at your phone revealing a TikTok success story in dropshipping sends you into a whirlwind of temptation. Consequently, your mind convinces you to fetch a glass of wine and cheese from the fridge, and before you return to your work setup, two hours have vanished, and no writing has taken place. This scenario resonates with every entrepreneur who has pursued a meaningful endeavour. While Newton didn't contend with TikTok in 1665, he undoubtedly grappled with procrastination induced by the plague's isolation. Conquering procrastination demands focused techniques, like the Pomodoro Technique, which prescribes working in concentrated, timed intervals, and establishing rigid deadlines to confront this formidable adversary head-on.

5. Build Resilience and Learn from Failure

Success rarely follows a linear path, and Newton encountered his fair share of failures. He is not alone; many entrepreneurs who achieved prominence faced adversity. Elon Musk experienced setbacks with Zip2 and X.com (later becoming PayPal) before triumphing with SpaceX and Tesla. Jeff Bezos weathered several business failures before Amazon's success. Likewise, Howard Schultz's struggles with Starbucks' initial reception eventually gave way to global coffeehouse dominance. The journeys of these entrepreneurs exemplify the substantial value of failure. Successful individuals embrace failure because they've learned to harness it for forward progress. Therefore, they develop resilience by regarding setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth. To navigate this terrain effectively, it's crucial to analyse not only your mistakes but your successes, adapt, and continue with renewed determination. A Life Coach can be instrumental in helping you recognize your achievements.

6. Practice Mindfulness and Self-Reflection

Our world today operates at a breakneck pace, inundating us with an overwhelming abundance of information, solutions, and options. For entrepreneurs and creatives, this incessant rush can trigger excitement, often leading to the temptation of biting off more than you can chew. The sheer volume of distractions and the absence of a structured path make it incredibly easy to lose touch with your authentic self. Regular self-reflection and mindfulness exercises offer a lifeline, anchoring you to your goals and purpose. Much like Newton's moments of quiet contemplation, these practices help you remain grounded, aligned, and in sync with your creative journey. Thanks to my background as a Physiotherapist, I have also integrated mindfulness, stretches, and self-centering techniques into my Life Coaching sessions with clients who need this. Surprisingly, some creatives shy away from slowing down, primarily because their minds race at 100mph, and they may never have received proper guidance on mindfulness. Plus, they might mistakenly view mindfulness as exclusive to yogis and gurus. If you find yourself in this category, book a one-on-one session with me. I'll demonstrate how to regain your center and rekindle your creative fire.

7. Find an Accountability Partner

The adage, "If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together," holds true in this context. It's imperative to acknowledge that the individuals accompanying you on your creative journey aren't always the friends you grew up with, your school buddies, or even your family. These relationships have their unique roles, often centered around love and companionship. However, when it comes to your creative aspirations, your peers—those traveling in the same direction—are the ones you should actively seek. Newton frequently exchanged ideas and collaborated with his peers, demonstrating the power of accountability and shared vision. I've personally witnessed the most significant progress as an entrepreneur when I've had someone to hold me accountable. This someone can be a Life Coach or a community where you can share your creative goals and track your progress. Having an individual or group to answer to can be an immensely potent motivator. As a Life Coach, I can empower you to develop self-discipline, not only by holding you accountable but also by providing tools tailored specifically to your self-growth. If you're interested in personalized accountability, book a one-on-one session with me as your Life Coach and your dedicated cheerleader.
